People ask why Ingleby is two studios and not one. It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that software and games ask different things of the people who make them.
Ingleby Labs is our product design and engineering studio. Its work is software that people rely on. Purser, our money app for iPhone and iPad, shows what is safe to spend and never moves money. It is judged by one question: does it do what it says?
PixelBattle Studios is our game studio. It is built on a simple idea, that a great game is made one pixel at a time. One Button is a party game for four, now in development. Code Name is a co-op action game, coming soon. The Arcade, five free microgames you can play in the browser, is live today. Games are judged by a different question: do people want to play again, and do they remember it?
Two audiences, two names
Someone who wants to know what is safe to spend before payday is not the same person who wants a game for four friends on a Friday night. Each studio has its own name, its own site and its own audience, and neither has to borrow the other’s voice. Ingleby Labs lives at inglebylabs.com. PixelBattle Studios lives at pixelbattle.net.
One standard
Keeping the studios apart does not mean holding them to different rules. Whatever we make has to work, has to be honest about what it does, and has to be finished before it ships. A money app that overstates itself and a game that ships half done fail in the same way. They ask for trust and do not earn it.
Why a parent company at all
Ingleby is the company behind both. It is where the shared standard lives, and where the things that do not belong to either studio live too, including this site. Ingleby LLC is based in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
It also helps us be straight about where the effort goes. Roughly half of our time goes to software, a little over a third to games, and the rest to writing that we publish openly. You can see the current split on the home page, and we will change it when the work changes.
What to expect
Expect each studio to talk about its own work in its own voice, and expect Ingleby to talk about the things they share. If you want to follow along, the newsroom carries dated notes, and the portfolio shows where every product and title stands today.
